Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited staged the 22nd Annual Premier Show and Sale of Pedigree and Commercial Salers Cattle under the auspices of the Salers Cattle Society.
In general, trade for both pedigree and commercial females greatly exceeded expectations, whilst bulls met with a limited demand resulting in very selective bidding.
At the Friday’s show, judge Gerald Smith, Drumsleed, found his female champion in the form of the senior heifer Darnford Evita from David Watson,Banchory. Evita is by the French sire Vaillante and out of Cuil Beauty, she is five months in-calf to Darnford Elton. She went on to sell for 4000gns to J Innes and Sons, Dunscroft, Huntly.
Male Champion of the show was Whitebog Hercules who went on to take Overall Champion and sold for 4200gns to Messrs Aitken, Carlopshill.
Reserve overall champion and reserve male champion was Harestone General from Neil Barclay, Crathes, Banchory. General went on to sell for joint top price of 6000gns to Garpel Farms, Cumnock.
Darnford Earl also hit the high notes for David Watson selling for 6000gns to Messrs A McConchie, Mains of Penninghame.
Top priced pedigree female was Cuil Eleanor from Graham and Colin McClymont, Cuil Palnue, which made 4400gns to Alan Howatson, Risk, Newton Stewart.
With a host of buyers forward from both the North of Scotland and Wales; the trade for the commercial section can only be described as electric. A pair of Salers cross in-calf heifers from Mains of Pennighame topped their section at £2250. This was followed at £1700 for a pen of three in-calf heifers from Stanbury Manor, Cornwall.
Champion pen of commerical heifers came from Cuil, with four bulling heifers which sold for £1700 to Messrs Guild Jones, Rhayader.
Topping the yearling heifers and heifer stirk section at £1650 was a pen of six from Mains of Penninghame selling to Alex and Jonathan Wright, Pinmore Mains, Girvan.
Pedigree cattle averages: eight in-calf heifers £2862, five bulling heifers £3381, 13 bulls £4361.
Commercial cattle averages: 12 in-calf heifers £1683.33, 86 bulling heifers £1218.37, 95 Yearling Heifers averaged £1277.89.
