Omagh Show – Saturday 4 July 2026

The Salers Cattle Society held its first Northern Ireland National Show at Omagh Show on Saturday 4 July, marking an important milestone for the breed. Exhibitors from across the province came together to compete across seven classes before the day’s championships.

Judging was carried out by Alan Howatson of the renowned Risk Salers herd, Newton Stewart. Alan established one of the earliest Salers herds in south-west Scotland and has many years’ experience breeding, exhibiting and judging the breed, bringing a wealth of practical knowledge to the inaugural Northern Ireland National Show.

The championship honours belonged to the Drumlegagh herd of J. & E.A. Elliott. Their cow Drumlegagh Savannah, winner of the Cow, In Calf or With Calf at Foot class, went on to secure both the Senior Championship and the Overall Championship. The Elliott family also claimed the Reserve Senior Championship and Reserve Overall Championship with Drumlegagh Troy, completing a clean sweep of the senior titles.

The junior honours were shared between two exhibitors. Stephen Maginn’s Lisnamaul Vincent, winner of the junior bull class, claimed the Junior Championship, while Pearse O’Kane’s Lower Bolie Vogue, winner of the junior heifer class, was awarded the Reserve Junior Championship.

Elsewhere in the day’s judging, Seamus Connell’s Ballykeel Unreal topped the senior heifer class, while Drumlegagh Avichi headed the 2026 calf class. The Pair of Animals competition was won by the Drumlegagh team ahead of Lower Bolie.

The breed also enjoyed success in the afternoon’s Interbreed Beef Championship, where Drumlegagh Savannah was awarded Second Reserve Interbreed Champion by judge Andrew Kay, rounding off a memorable day for both the Elliott family and the Salers breed.

Away from the breed classes, seven year old Cadain O’Kane from Lower Bolie Salers received a Highly Commended award in the Young Handlers Competition under judge James Nisbett.
