Pedigree Beef Day, Borderway Mart, 09/05/2026
The Salers section at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, saw steady trade, with the day’s leading price of 6,500gns paid for the junior and reserve overall champion, Preenbank Vauban, from Bryn and Fred Robinson, Shropshire.
Judging was in the hands of Rob Livesey, from the Cleuchhead herd, Melrose, who selected P.M. & S.M. Donger’s Seawell Understudy as winner of the first bull class and Senior Champion. The February 2024-born bull is by Impeccable and out of Seawell Opal, and was the 2025 Great Yorkshire Show Junior Male Champion, Overall Junior Champion, and Reserve Male Champion. Standing second in the class and taking the Reserve Senior Championship sash was Bertrand Facon’s Gentons Umpire, a son of Murphy out of the imported dam Olly. Later in the sale ring, Gentons Umpire sold for 4,000gns to Messrs Frew, Dumfriesshire.

The Donger family continued their success in the intermediate section when Lot 179, Seawell United, won first prize and the Intermediate Championship before later going on to secure the Male Championship and Overall Championship. The Omarsy son born in February-2024 was out of Seawell Soroya.

Reserve Intermediate Champion went to stablemate Seawell Universe, again by Omarsy but this time from Seawell Samantha, while third prize was awarded to Lot 181, Seawell Usher. Born in March 2024, Seawell Usher is sired by Obelix and out of Seawell Inga. Following its show success, the bull realised the second top price of the day, 6,000gns, when selling to pedigree breeders R & A Crockett Ltd, Earlston, for their Bacardi herd.
Class Three for bulls born in 2025 was won by Fred Robinson’s Preenbank Vauban. The February 2025-born bull, by Cleuchhead Ranger out of Preenbank Lady Zena, also secured the Junior Championship before later standing Reserve Male Champion and Reserve Overall Champion. The reserve champion’s sale-ring performance matched its show success when it topped the day’s trade at 6,500gns to pedigree breeders AW & GS Panniers, Worcestershire.

Female pedigree trade topped at 3,200gns for Bertrand Facon’s Gentons Va-Va-Voom Poll, while Gentons Valencia went under the hammer at 3,000gns, with both heading home to pedigree breeder P Featherstone, Leicestershire. Another pedigree breeder, T Atkinson, Cumbria, bid to 3,000gns for Gentons Ultimate, a Murphy daughter out of Cleuchhead Magalie 1305, and then went on to add a further six commercial heifers to his shopping basket. The first three were Salers-cross heifers from Messrs R.A. Austin, Boreland of Girthon, at £2,400 apiece, followed by three red heifers from local breeder James Teasdale, Penrith, at £2,300 each. Society members Messrs White, North Yorkshire, purchased the remaining two pedigree females, Gentons Verity and Gentons Vivi, for 3,000gns each and, completing their purchases, paid £3,000 for Gentons Pedigree Livestock’s commercial female.
Derbyshire-based A.T. Richardson completed the sale by paying £2,100 each for James Teasdale’s run of three 11–13-month-old black Salers bulling heifers.
