The sale of the commercial herd of Salers from Gill and Malcolm Pye’s Rednock Estate, staged at Stirling Agricultural Centre on Saturday 13 September, saw buyers compete keenly for the run of cows with Charolais-sired calves at foot, underlining the commercial strength of the Rednock cattle and the reputation they have built for quality and consistency.
The Rednock herd of Salers, established by Gill and Malcolm Pye at Port of Menteith, Stirlingshire, has long been recognised for the quality and consistency of its cattle. Built on strong Rigel and Drumaglea bloodlines and managed to the highest health status, the herd has produced animals that combine maternal functionality with commercial appeal.
Among its notable achievements, the herd set a breed record price of 20,000gns at Stirling in May 2025 for a Salers bull Rednock Top Gun. Gill and Malcolm Pye have been strong advocates for Salers cattle within the UK beef industry, demonstrating the breed’s strengths in fertility and ease of calving.
A total clearance was achieved, with 47 cows with calves at foot achieving a top price of 5,400gns and an average of £4133.
The females were topped by Rednock Swan Poll (Lot 81) at 5,400gns. This stylish 2021-born polled red cow, sired by Cumbrian Royal and sold with her Thrunton Paddington steer calf, was snapped up by J M & W Turnbull, Kingsbarns, Fife, who invested heavily across the catalogue. Also hitting the top bracket was Rednock Dolly Blk (Lot 91), a 2022 daughter of Drumaglea Kes, with her heifer calf at foot, making 5,000gns, again to the Turnbull’s alongside Rednock Solar Poll (Lot 90), a 2022-born polled red cow by Rigel Officer, out of Rigel Luna Poll with her heifer calf at foot, which sold for 4,700gns and Rednock Deirdre Blk for 4,600gns.
Among the older cows, Rednock Phebe Blk (Lot 55), a 2016-born daughter of Rigel Byron Poll, achieved 4,600gns when purchased by W Dunlop & Sons, East Lothian, while Rednock Portugal Poll (Lot 77), a 2020-born daughter of Rigel Munro Poll, went under the hammer at the same price to add to the consignment heading to the home of J M & W Turnbull.
The 4,200gns mark was hit on several occasions, and leading this section was Rednock Princess Poll (Lot 66), a 2018-born polled red cow by Rigel Munro Poll out of Rigel Pallas, which sold with her Charolais-sired steer calf at foot for 4,200gns to W Dunlop & Sons, East Lothian. Matching that figure was Rednock Tamara (Lot 69), a 2019-born daughter of Drumaglea Kes, secured by James D Simpson, Biggar. Another at 4,200gns was Rednock Lisa Poll (Lot 71), a 2019-born Rigel Munro Poll daughter out of Rednock Liesel Poll, purchased by J C McLaren & Partners, Crieff, along with Rednock Nalani (Lot 89), a 2022-born horned red daughter of Rigel Officer, which joined the Dunlop family’s Elmscleugh herd.
Several females found their level at 4,100gns, including the oldest female Rigel Luna Poll (Lot 45), a 2014-born polled black daughter of Rigel Byron Poll, sold with her Charolais sired heifer calf at foot to J C McLaren & Partners, Crieff. Heading to the same home at the same money was Rednock Tamsin Poll (Lot 80), a 2021-born Rigel Munro Poll daughter, with a Thrunton Paddington heifer calf at foot. Elmscleugh also bid to 4,100gns for Rednock Skye (Lot 83), a 2021-born with her steer calf at foot.
A number of quality females changed hands at 4,000gns. Among them was Rednock Olita Poll (Lot 59), a 2017-born polled daughter of Rigel Rourke Poll, knocked down to A J B Forrest, Biggar. The 2018-born Drumaglea Kes daughters Rednock Twinkle (Lot 62) and Rednock Odyssey (Lot 63) matched the price, selling to GAT & EC Hill, Bathgate, and W Dunlop & Sons, respectively.
Further interest at this level saw Rednock Pyrenees (Lot 68), another Kes daughter, make 4,000gns to C Imrie, Glasgow, while Rednock Star Poll (Lot 88), a 2022-born polled cow by Cumbrian Royal, also sold for 4,000gns, joining the McLaren herd at Crieff.
Speaking after the sale, Gill and Malcolm Pye said they were “delighted with the trade and explained the decision to reduce numbers was to allow the family to focus fully on the core pedigree Salers business.”
