The rolling showgrounds of Builth Wells once again provided the perfect backdrop for the Royal Welsh Show 2025, a calendar highlight for livestock enthusiasts and rural communities across the UK. For the Salers Cattle Society of the UK, the event marked another proud chapter in the breed’s growing story, as a small but determined group of exhibitors showcased Salers cattle.

SHOW RESULTS
While Bluetongue movement restrictions inevitably limited the number of entries this year, they did nothing to dampen the spirit of those representing the breed. In fact, it was the very resilience and practicality of Salers that came to the fore, reminding visitors and breeders alike why this hardy, easy-calving maternal breed continues to grow in popularity, particularly among commercial producers.
Special recognition must go to Gwawr Griffiths of Anglesey, who went above and beyond to ensure the Salers breed was well represented. Her commitment and effort in preparing and presenting all the Salers entries at this year’s show reflect the passion and dedication that define the Salers community.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the ongoing support of the Society’s long-standing sponsors. For the eleventh consecutive year, Gamlins Law played a key role in ensuring the breed’s presence at the Royal Welsh. Represented by Rachel Wynn Jones, Gamlins Law continues to champion rural and agricultural communities across North Wales, and their generous sponsorship allows the Society to maintain a strong, professional image at one of the UK’s most prestigious agricultural events. As specialists in conveyancing, family law, wills, probate, personal injury, and criminal defence, their commitment to the rural sector remains invaluable.

The Salers judging this year was in expert hands, with Mr Richard Hartshorn of Telford—an experienced South Devon breeder—tasked with assessing the line-up. His considered, methodical approach was widely praised, and his decisions reflected a clear understanding of functional cattle with commercial value.
The results told a compelling story of genetic strength and continuity, with Parys Treacle Tart emerging as a standout example of the breed’s best qualities. This homebred senior heifer, born in June 2023 and sired by Preenbank Lord Bisto, claimed Overall Champion, Best Senior Female, and Best Turned-Out Animal. She is out of Felin Mona Mai, herself a previous Royal Welsh Champion—and it was this dam who returned to the ring this year to claim the title of Reserve Female Champion, proving the enduring strength of the maternal line.

In the male section, Parys Unreal, a promising young bull sired by Murphy, the 2019 Salers Concours National Overall Champion, took Male Champion and the Best Junior Male title. His performance also earned him Reserve Overall Champion, highlighting his potential as a future herd sire of real impact.
The stockman’s trophy was awarded to Abby Burrell, a promising young stock person from the Parys team, in recognition of her exemplary work in cattle preparation and presentation.

The 2025 Royal Welsh Show proved once again that the Salers breed continues to punch well above its weight, driven by passionate breeders and dedicated supporters. The Society is immensely proud of this year’s achievements and looks forward to building on this momentum as interest in the breed continues to grow across the UK.
For breeders and commercial producers alike, Salers offer an unrivalled combination of calving ease, fertility, and maternal performance—making them a breed for the future, today.
