SAUVEUR REIGNS SUPREME AT THE ROYAL HIGHLAND SHOW

The 2025 Royal Highland Show will be remembered as a milestone moment for the Salers breed in the UK. Not only did Sauveur and Kaimburn Raquel dominate their breed section, they also made breed history in the interbreed competition. The dynamic pair were selected as Reserve Beef Interbreed Pair under the watchful eye of renowned judge Mike Massie—an incredible first for the Salers breed.

Adding to that historic success, the Salers Interbreed Group of Four, judged by John Jeffrey of Kersknowe, achieved another breakthrough by being tapped out as Reserve Interbreed Beef Team of Four. This double interbreed recognition is a resounding statement of the breed’s growing strength and presence on the national stage.

In a remarkable tribute to a pioneering figure in British cattle breeding, the Royal Highland Show played host to an emotional and historic triumph in the Salers section. It was in 1984 that the late Mr. Walling imported the first Salers cattle into the UK, and a year later helped establish the Salers Cattle Society of the UK. Four decades on, the Walling family—trading as Farmstock Genetics—honoured that legacy by clinching the breed championship with an outstanding imported bull.

The star of the day was Sauveur, an impressive stock bull born in December 2020 and bred in France by Phialip Romain. Sauveur captured the eye of esteemed judge and respected breeder Mr. Patrick Boyd, of the Isle of Tiree. A lifelong advocate of French genetics, Mr. Boyd has bred Salers since 1986, making it fitting that this French-born bull claimed the Male Championship and ultimately lifted the prestigious Swardsman Perpetual Trophy for Overall Salers Breed Champion.

Despite a slightly reduced number of entries, the calibre of competition was exceptional. Sauveur faced strong opposition, particularly from Kaimburn Raquel, a stylish cow-and-calf pair from Lewis Ralston. Sired by Cuil Marvin, Raquel is a full sister to the 2022 Overall Champion Kaimburn Precious and proved her worth by securing the Female Championship along with the QET Perpetual Trophy. She later earned the Salers Bell as Reserve Overall Champion.

Rednock Estate continued their impressive season following a record-breaking sale at the Stirling Bull Sales in May. Their strong string at the Highland Show included no fewer than eight championship titles. Among their standout entries was Rednock Togo, expertly shown by Alfie MacGregor. This eye-catching heifer, sired by Icare and out of Rednock Tonga, was awarded Junior Female Champion and went on to be crowned Overall Junior Champion.

Rednock Ultimate, a Senateur son, followed suit by winning Junior Male Champion and later earning Reserve Male Champion. Rednock Togo also claimed Reserve Female Champion, rounding off a stellar day for Rednock, who also took home top honours in the Pairs and Group of Three.

The Walling family added yet another accolade by taking Reserve Junior Female Champion with Cumbrian Jaconde 1477 Poll, a homebred daughter of the supreme champion Sauveur.

Meanwhile, Kaimburn Ultra, a Tibet son out of Kaimburn Precious, brought further success for Edgerston Trading (2006) Ltd, securing the Reserve Junior Male title.

Congratulations to all exhibitors on a superb showcase of cattle, dedication, and breed advancement. The 2025 Royal Highland Show has undoubtedly raised the bar—and the profile—of Salers cattle across the UK and beyond.
