REDNOCK TARZAN TOPS AT CASTLE DOUGLAS AS DEMAND FOR SALERS SOARS

The 33rd annual premier show and sale of pedigree and commercial Salers was held at Wallets Marts, Castle Douglas on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd November 2024. The event was kindly sponsored by the Farmers Guardian.
In charge of judging the strong pedigree line up was Mr George McCall, Carrick Salers. George runs 50 Salers cows with around 20 going to the Charolais bull and the remainder going back to the Salers.
The judge found his Overall Champion in his Female Champion from the Livesey Family Cleuchead Hope 1873 an April 2023 born Heifer sired by Noble and out of Cleuchead Hope 1356. Hope 1873 then went on to take Top Pedigree Female price selling for 6,500gns to J Martin & Sons, Swinlees, Ayrshire. The Livesey Family also sold Cleuchhead Carat 1908 a May 2023 born Heifer by Essil Olly and out of Cleuchhead Carat 1560, Carat 1908 went on to sell for 3,800gns selling to KM & CAW Gowthorpe.
Rednock Estate led in the auction ring achieving the top price of the day 11,000gns for the Junior Champion, Rednock Tarzan Poll a April -2023 bull by Senateur, out of Rednock Dandelion Poll and sold to pedigree breeders the Livesey Family for their Cleuchhead herd. Tarzan had been Male Champion at the Highland Show and Overall Breed Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show this year.
Second top price of the day was Cuil Seattle from Colin McClymont, Seattle is an August 2022 born bull by Darnford Powerhouse and out of Cuil Petal. Seattle stood, Senior and Overall Male champion and Reserve Overall Champion, he then sold for 7,500gns selling to R A Austin.
Up next at 6,200gns was Rednock Trojan Poll from Gill & Malcolm Pye, Trojan is an April 2023 born bull by Rednock Oswald Poll and out of Rigel Dior Poll. Trojan was bought and heads home with Glenkiln Farms.
Also selling well for Gill & Malcolm Pye was Rednock Toreador a March 2023 born bull by Icare and out of Rednock Carmen. Toreador sold for 6000gns to pedigree breeders the Lyburn family for their Over Bow herd.
The first bull up for P J Maginn & Sons was Lisnamaul Topper a January 2023 born bull who was Reserve Intermediate Champion. Topper is by Sidney and out of Lisnamaul Princess, Topper went on to make 5,200gns selling to Dunnet Holding. Topper had had a successful show season winning Interbreed Junior Male Champion at the Newry Show this year.
Next up in the ring selling well was Intermediate Champion Cleuchhead Tin Tin from the Livesey Family. TinTin is a March 2023 born bull by Noble and out of Cleuchhead Gentle and heading home with A & J Craig for 5,000gns.
Topping the two production drafts was Judith and Patrick Boyd from the Isle of Tiree who commanded a top price of 4,000gns for a Icare daughter Drumaglea Select born in November 2022. She went to H Limond. Up next from the Drumaglea herd was Drumaglea Sonsie a December 2022 born Heifer by Django out of Drumaglea Bella. She went on to sell for 3,200gns selling to James Morton & Sons, also heading home with them for 3,000gns was Drumaglea Tiramisu a March 2023 born heifer by Hibou and out of Drumaglea Noelle. Drumaglea Tequila and Drumaglea Tiffany also made 3,000gns this time both being snapped up by Andrew Sleigh. The last heifer selling also for 3,000gns was Drumaglea Tanya a March 2023 born Heifer by Icare and out of Drumaglea Niamh heads home with KM & CAW Gowthorpe.
Rigel Pedigree toped their trade with Rigel Vixen Poll a March 2023 born Heifer by Rigel Orlando and out of Rigel Vinca, Vixen Poll sold for 2,600gns to A Henry, they also took home Rigel Correze again By Rigel Orlando and this time out of Rigel Carat, Correze sold for 2,100gns.
Up next they had two Heifers both selling for 2,400gns each was Rigel Cleo Poll a March 2023 born Heifer by Rigal Orlando and out of Cleuchhead Mhairi, Cleo Poll sold to E Townend. The next heifer selling for 2,400gns was Rigel Adagio Poll an April 2023 born heifer by Lascaux and out of Rigel Avalon Poll she heads home with J J Roddan.

2 pedigree bulling heifers sold with a top price of 6,500gns and an average of £5,407.
12 in calf heifers achieved a top price of 4,000gns and an average of £2,842.50.

11 pedigree bulls sold and a top price of 11,000gns to an average of £5,765.45. (+ £1033)
Leading the overall commercial trade was R A Austin, at £2900 for four 24-26 month old heifers in-calf to Drumaglea Perseus the top priced bull at Castle Douglas in 2022, they were snapped up by Ian Stark who also purchased the remaining four 24-26 month old heifers for £2,700. Up next from John Martin a selection of 24 month old heifers. He sold 1 in calf heifer for £2,800 selling to R & M Dunlop he also snapped up another three also for £2,800. Up next in the in-calf heifer section was from Angus Gowthorpe with his three 20 month old heifers who are in calf to Drumsleed Ricardo, they sold for £2,500 to Dunnet Holding.
Leading the bulling heifers trade was from the Livesey Family who sold five bulling heifers at £2,400 each to R & M Dunlop. Closely following was also from the Livesey family, with six bulling heifers at £2,300 each to Dunnet Holding and the Livesey’s also sold a pen of five commercial females sold for £2,200 each to Thomas Smith & Sons. Rusko Farms also sold a pen of five for £1,450 each and another pen of five for £1,400. J Martin & Sons also sold two pens of four for £1,750. Up next we have Yearling heifers a pen of five from Colin McClymont which sold for £2,000 selling to Ian Stark, Colin also had two pens of five selling for £1,900 to J & B Vaughan and R Milne. Colin McClymont also won Champion & Reserve commercial pen winning the Willie Davidson Memorial Trophy for the 2nd year running.
Topping the heifer stirk section was R A Austin who raised £1,350 each for two heifer stirks to J J Roddan. Firm of Andrew M Brown also sold a pen of two for £1,300 each selling to J Warnock & Sons.
208 commercial females were forward and sold.
137 Bulling heifers sold to a top of £2,400 and an average of £1,730.29. (+ £409)
18 heifer stirks sold to a top of £1,350 and an average of £1,122.22.
53 In-calf heifers sold to a top of £2,900 and an average of £1,730.29.
