A brilliant weekend in Castle Douglas with new and old friends. We thank those attending the AGM on Friday afternoon. Followed by a very successful presentation dinner Friday evening, and even some spectacular dancing! A reminder that the Northern Ireland Dinner is held each February so some could continue where they left off!
Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited staged the annual two day premier show and sale of Salers Cattle on behalf of the Society.
At the pedigree show on Friday 1st November the judge Mr David Wilson, Kirkmabreck found his overall champion in Lot 12 Rednock Mauriac a senior bull from G & M Pye, Rednock Farms, sired by Rigel Rourke Poll out of Rigel Trieste. This May 2107 bull was first in his class, senior champion, male champion and overall champion, eventually selling for 4,000gns to Messrs A Kerr & Co, Fagra.
Female champion was Lot 3 Cumbrian Jolie 974, sired by French Import Ideal out of Cumbrian Jolie 536, an in calf heifer from Farmstock Genetics which unfortunately passed through the ring unsold.
In general buyers were in a cautious mood mainly due to the lack of confidence given all the uncertainty within the industry. Bull trade topped at 6,000gns for Bacardi Nashville an April 2018 bull shown by R & A Crockett and selling to Messrs Alexander, Mains of Mause. This was followed at 5,200gns for Drumaglea My Favourite from P Boyd, Tiree selling to N & D Austin, Boreland of Girthon. Harestone Magnum from N Barclay made 5,000gns to Messrs Alexander, Mains of Mause.
Pedigree females topped at 2,800gns for an in calf heifer from Colin McClymont, Cuil selling to Messrs Quirk, Isle of Man.
Trade in the commercial section was also well back on the year with only the very best quality close to last years flying trade. The main feature of this section was once again the consignment from Cuil whose champion pen sold for £1,600 and 39 averaged £1,247.69 with the majority of them being yearlings. 4 In-calf heifers from Roy and Adam Crockett topped their section at £1,700.
