Salers exhibited at the Driffield Show (Wed 18th July 2012) by Angus and Kerry Gowthorpe, and by Carolyn Fox achieved considerable success in the largest and most demanding classes of the show.
Despite having as many entries forward as did the Charolais and Simmental breeds, the Salers competed in the Any Other Pure Beef Breeds classes. The Driffield Show is the largest one day show in the UK, and attracted over 40 animals forward to the AOPB classes.
Judged by noted Shorthorn breeder, Hon Gerald Turton of Upsall Shorthorns, the excellent entries of Salers, Shorthorns, Herefords, South Devons, Lincoln Reds, Longhorns, Belted Galloways and Red Polls gave the judge plenty to consider, and having considered at some length, he placed Salers 1st and 3rd in the senior heifer class, with Kerry Gowthorpe going on to take her heifer through to the Reserve Champion spot. Salers also were placed 2nd in the bull class behind the Shorthorn bull that went on to be placed Champion Any Other Pure Beef Breed.
The excellent presentation of the animals by Carolyn Fox and the Gowthorpes, and their exemplary behaviour in the show ring was rewarded, not only by this fine collection of rosettes but also with a great deal of interest in the breed in the cattle lines, and the sun was shinning!
